At the mat and frame party this morning we were all busy getting prints matted and framed for the show. The show hangs on April 26th or so with an opening on April 29th. This part of the show is getting done early because Easter weekend is not a time to get volunteers to work. While matting a photograph I said to Heath Clayton that the pictures look much different in person than they do on a computer monitor. He replied that they were images on a computer screen, but once you print them they become photographs.
There’s something about the tactile part of photography that pixels just don’t have. I made platinotypes for fifteen years or so and one of the absolute best parts about platinotypes was the paper. Just holding the rag paper was a sensuous experience, and when it was wet it had a whole different feel to it. There was a completely different experience for alternative process prints. So yes, photographs are different than images on a computer screen and aren’t we all glad we can tell the difference?
Here we are matting and framing away.
The folio is still at the printers. I need to make two small changes to the CD for the folio and prepare the printing of the CD and I am done until it’s time to show up for the opening on April 29.
