A few weeks back I noted that just about all the images that were included in the blog during my photo safari last year were not included in a project that resulted from the trip. I have given this some thought over the past few weeks and I think that the answer is in the selection criteria of images for a project. The criteria for the folio and the criteria for the blog photographs are different. It is no surprise the results should be different if the criteria for selection are different.
Folios are focused efforts. Determining the criteria for selection is a major task. The result is a set of requirements used to judge the images. There are lots of criteria that come into play when selecting images to be included in a folio. Do the images continue to expand upon the introductory statement of the folio? (Yes, the theme is decided before the folio is created. It might even be decided before the photography commences!) Is the location where the images were made the key attribute? Is the theme among the images consistent? Are the images variations on a single composition? Do the images tell a story? Do the tones of the image (or color palette, if you are so inclined) contribute to the mood of the folio? How many horizontal and vertical images are included in the folio? There could be many more criteria than those I have listed depending on the nature of the folio.
Selection of images for the blog is based on the immediate feelings for the individual images and the results of the day. There is only one day’s worth of material to select from and an incomplete understanding of where the images fit into the overall artistic theme being explored. Selection of the blog images are “here’s what I saw today that I think might be of interest to the blogosphere.”
With such vastly differing criteria driving image selection, it’s no wonder the images that you see here on the blog are different than the images that make it into a finished project. After a couple of weeks of thinking about this, I could summarize the thoughts about these blogs with the statement, “The blog photos are snapshots taken on my creative journey to the finished project.”
