From the Carpenter Portfolio
The evolution of my photography has taken me on a long and interesting trip. The fuel for the trip has been the usual combination of technology and artistic inspiration. I believe DaGuerre opined photography was the bastard child of science and art. He recognized this in photography’s infancy and it remains the same today. It will also be true tomorrow. That’s just the nature of the activity that we choose to pursue. Technology and art take turns pushing and pulling us into the next phase of our artistic adventure.
The advances in technology allow photographers to pursue additional avenues for the display of their artwork. I believe this is the true value of technology. Artistic inspiration is of no value unless it can be communicated to the audience. One of the goals should be to expand the number of people that can see your work. Advances in technology which provide a photographer additional venues or methods of showing their art work are wonderful things that truly advance art.
I started with individual gelatin silver prints to mount, mat and frame. The silver prints gave way to platinum/palladium prints. Creating enlarged negatives for platinum printing propelled me into the digital world. The digital alternative gave me a variety of ways to present my photographs to the world. My blog, web folios, print folios, magazines and wall art are now viable alternatives to display my art. Ten years ago all I had was wall art.
We have all the photographic technology ever created available to us to make our art. It’s like having an entire tool box available to you when you grew up with a single hammer in your tool box.
