I read the following anecdote on an internet sports forum.
“A longtime cameraman named Chuck Davidson was interviewed about his most memorable picture. He said he had so many that what stands out are the ones he didn't get.
He then told how he was working for a TV station in Michigan in 1966 and was at the train platform for Notre Dame's arrival for the big game in East Lansing. He had just come to the end of his roll on his 35mm camera and needed 30seconds to rewind. While the camera was rewinding, you can guess who got off the train and slipped on the ice (Ed. Note: That would be Nick Eddy, Notre Dame’s star running back. Without his services for the game, Notre Dame and Michigan State University played to a 10 all tie game. It was one of the many “games of the century.”) Believe it or not, a miss from 47 years ago is what first came to his mind.”
Photographers always remember the misses and the ones that were "almost" great. The memorable images that were absolutely perfect save for the one tiny detail that you (and only you) can immediately see and will drive you crazy forever.
