Headstone, Holy Cross Cemetery
Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC was the president of the University of Notre Dame for thirty seven years. His remarkable life ended earlier this year. Last week, a simple marker was placed on his grave. Several of us visited Holy Cross Cemetery to pay our respects to this great man. One of our group brought a candle to the grave. The candle came from The Grotto, a place special to Notre Dame and especially Father Ted.
There were several cigars next to the grave. I placed the candle from the Grotto next to the cigars and made this photograph. I stood up, backed up a couple of paces and without looking said to a visitor next to me, "Had to leave Ted a light for his cigars."
My unknown companion laughed a little. He remained unknown for only a few seconds. I recognized him as Father John Jenkins, the current University President, not sporting his clerical garb. He, too, was out walking on a lovely spring day and stopped by to pay respects to his predecessor.
