Eel Creek Dunes (Right Side up)
This photograph was made on the Eel Creek Dunes south of Florence, Oregon. I saw these shapes in the dunes and was taken by how well it looked on the ground glass of my view camera. I focused carefully and made the exposure. Just as I finished, Bruce Barnbaum, our workshop instructor, walked up and said that was a great composition. He set up his view camera right next to mine and made the same photograph. Not being a really experienced photographer at this time, having Bruce come up and make almost the same photograph gave me some confidence that my photography was headed in the right direction.
His version of the photograph was included in one of his photo books. Mine is on my web site and my blog. Sometimes, I show my photograph upside down because I loved the way it looked on my groundglass. That’s a fun thing with abstracts – you can show them any which way you want and they still make sense.
