I’m a day away from being “Out West” to begin the annual photo safari. American photographers assume that landscape photography is photography of the American West. While the American West is truly spectacular not all of us have the Desert Southwest or Point Lobos in our backyard. Nor, can a sizeable portion of American landscape photographers get to the American West. As the title says, the Landscape is where you find it and there is where you photograph the landscape. Moving from the Pacific Northwest to North Carolina about thirty years ago gave me the insight to redefine my approach to making landscape photography local. It took a while, but the landscape I found was much different and I had to change my way of seeing to photograph in my new home. Preparation - Past and Present
Well, here's what preparation used to look like. It's all that's left of the old darkoom. A kodak tray siphon and a few trays are all that is left. I have only a couple of days before this year’s photo safari. I’m continuing to practice using the iPad mini to perfect image files and make blog entries. Many years ago this time would be spent working feverishly in the darkroom preparing prints for evening discussions about photographic art. I think it has been ten years since I last made a print in a wet darkroom. It’s been over a year since I made physical prints for an exhibition. My latest project (Dancing with Light) is purely web based. I wonder if this is the future of photography. My generation was brought up with a reverence toward the artistic artifact. Owning a piece of art was a significant thing. The current generation is invested in the virtual world where ownership is confined to a device that can access the electrical impulses that represent the creative process. I’ve yet to decide if the virtualization of photographic images is actually a good thing for Fine Art Photography.
